FAQ

  • Which coverage amount is right for me?
    • Together with your financial advisor, you choose this amount when you take out your coverage. It can be as low as $25,000 or as high as $2,000,000. How much you need depends on your personal goals and your budget, since that will have a direct impact on how much coverage you can afford. The rule of thumb is one times your salary.
  • What do I need to do to receive my benefit?
      • Just fill out a claim form. It includes a personal information release form in case we need to get information about you from doctors or hospitals.
      • Your attending physician also has to complete an Attending Physician's Statement and provide us with supporting medical documents (e.g. biopsy report for cancer, test results for heart disease, etc.).
  • Will I have to wait long before I get my benefit?
    • Collecting all the medical information is often the longest step in the process. DFS may also need to get additional information from doctors, hospitals or your provincial health insurance board, which can cause delays. As soon as DFS receives all the necessary documents, your file is processed so you can receive your benefit as soon as possible.
  • Am I eligible for critical illness insurance?
    • Would an insurance company insure your home if it were burning down? It's kind of the same for critical illness insurance. To get this coverage, you can't be sick. So, if you're healthy, now's the time to apply!
  • Is this coverage for while I'm living?
    • Yes, absolutely! If you survive for 30 days after the diagnosis of a covered critical illness, you'll receive a benefit. You can use this benefit to get healthy again without having to worry about your finances!

      Some Harmony products also offer a death benefit and a premium refund if you never received a critical illness benefit. A benefit is paid whether you're diagnosed with a critical illness, you die or you've still got many healthy years ahead of you!
  • How can I pick the option that's right for me?
    • Here's what to do:
      1. Determine how much coverage you need.
      2. Choose how many illnesses you want to be covered for (10 or 25)?
      3. Think about how long you'll need the coverage for. You can choose coverage for 10 years, to age 65 or for life.
      4. Decide how you want to pay your insurance premiums. You can choose between a premium that always stays the same or one that goes up every 10 years.
      5. Figure out how much you want to spend. Remember to keep your budget in mind when making choices.

  • What do I need to do to get critical illness insurance?
      1. Meet with a financial advisor who will assess your needs and make a recommendation that's right for your situation.
      2. If you decide to go ahead, you'll need to complete an insurance application (including a medical questionnaire).
      3. You might need to undergo medical tests, depending on how old you are and how much coverage you want.
      4. Your application will be assessed by an underwriter who will inform your advisor of the decision.
  • Can I make changes to my policy later on? Will I be penalized?
    • Even though your Harmony product coverage amount is fixed, it can always be adjusted based on your changing needs and budget. Fees apply if you want to increase your coverage amount.
