Since it generally takes three or four years to earn an undergraduate degree, students often rack up more than $10,000 in debt before they graduate.

And compulsory fees are also on the rise. These fees cover things like athletics and recreation, student healthcare services, student union fees and other expenses for full-time Canadian students. Students paid an average of $663 in compulsory fees for the 2007-2008 academic year – an increase of $60 over the previous year.
