9 spring cleaning tips

Now that the days are longer and sunnier, why not give your home a good cleaning just in time for summer?

Spring cleaning is an annual tradition that gets people motivated and moving after a long cold winter. Here are 9 tips to help you make your house spic and span—quickly and efficiently.

The best way to tackle spring cleaning is with a plan. Make a list of everything that needs to be done and how long each task should take you. Then, identify the top 5 chores you want to tackle and decide when you’re going to do each one. It’ll make spring cleaning less stressful and intimidating. Once you’ve figured out what and when, write it down on the calendar so you don’t forget. You can also set a reminder on your smartphone.

2.Make sure you have everything you need

There’s nothing like starting a chore and realizing you don’t have what you need to get the job done. Before you start your spring cleaning, check your cleaning supplies. If you’re missing anything, go online to order what you need. While you’re shopping online, you might want to pick up a shower caddy or basket for the cleaning supplies you use the most—it’ll be so much easier to carry them around from room to room.

3.Put your winter stuff away

Winter jackets, scarves, hats, gloves and boots take up a lot of space. Pack all your winter stuff in a storage bin and put the bin away until next year. While you’re a

t it, go through your closet for any winter clothes or accessories you didn’t wear this season. If you don’t think you’ll be wearing them next winter either, maybe it’s time to part ways with them.

4.Go through your wardrobe

This spring, why not go through the rest of your wardrobe, too? After purging your closet, you’ll be left with just your favourites.

You’ll have a lot more room in your closet and it’ll be easier to find things! Donate anything you don’t want anymore to your favourite charity, so someone else can enjoy it.

5.Set a timer

Some people thrive on spring cleaning, while others will do anything to avoid it. Create a schedule that works for you. Spread out your chores and try to limit distractions while you’re doing them—no texting or TV breaks! Set achievable goals and reward yourself. Tell yourself that if you spend 2 hours cleaning the garage, you can binge watch 2 or 3 episodes of your favourite show later on. Remember, it’s all about finding the right balance.

6.Work from top to bottom

When you’re cleaning a room, start at the top and work your way down to the bottom. First, focus on the ceiling and clean any fan and light fixtures. Next, wash the walls with a mop and a diluted all-purpose cleaning solution, but this time start at the bottom. It’s probably a good idea to test the solution in an inconspicuous spot first to make sure it doesn’t leave a mark on the wall or remove the paint. Then, move on to the floors. Be careful when moving furniture or appliances!

7.Clean out your fridge

You’d be surprised at what’s in your fridge. Look closely at expiry dates and throw out any food that’s gone bad. Remove fridge drawers and wash them separately in warm water and dish soap. Most refrigerator stains can be removed with baking soda—mix it with a small amount of water to create a paste. And while you’re at it, why not go through your pantry to see what you still need and what you can donate to your local food bank.

8.Create a chore chart

A chore chart is a great way to get the whole family to pitch in and spend time together. It’s a simple and effective way to get everyone involved and keep track of what each person has to do. You can use a checklist with pictures, a wheel or any other chore chart that works for you. Get young children involved, by assigning them a few small tasks or pairing them up with a parent or sibling for a larger task.

9.Add some finishing touches

Now that your home is clean and tidy, treat yourself to some new potted plants or scented candles, or add a splash of colour with some new accent pieces. It’s a great way to brighten up your home, lift your spirits and spark your creative energy!

Stay safe and happy spring cleaning!
