The benefits of relaxation

Relaxation is a way to unwind and focus your attention inward. And when practiced regularly, it can do wonders for your physical and mental health. Here are some tips to get you started from our partner Novus Health.

Benefits

Experts usually recommend at least 20 minutes of uninterrupted relaxation, but even a few minutes can make a difference. Taking a moment to sit back and relax can help you:

  • Release stress so you can take on the day
  • Recharge your batteries so you can do your best work

Techniques

It’s important to find the right relaxation techniques for you. Change up your routine by trying a different technique each week. Do relaxation exercises several times a day, especially when you’re feeling stressed.

Deep breathing

Close your eyes and focus your attention on your breathing. Learn to breathe with your abdomen. Inhale deeply through your nose and fill your belly with air. Then exhale slowly, gradually letting the air out of your belly.

Meditation

Try to use as many senses as you can. Close your eyes and focus for a few minutes on a calming sound, image or word.

Reaching for the stars

Stand up and reach your arms up as high as you can as you inhale deeply. Then slowly lower your arms as you exhale. This will help calm your nerves and quiet your mind.

Clearing your mind

Be still, close your eyes, breathe slowly and clear your mind of all negative thoughts for at least 3 minutes.

It takes practice

As you learn what techniques work best for you, you’ll gain greater control over your mind and body. Use relaxation techniques whenever you start to feel overwhelmed, and do them at the end of the day to alleviate stress and maintain peace of mind.
