[Situation: Mélanie Saint-Pierre, palliative care physician at a hospital, talks about the emotional support she provides her patients.]
Sometimes people think doctors only care about patients' physical health. And while controlling symptoms is certainly a big part of what we do, we also play an important supporting role for our patients, as well as their caregivers.
I treat adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s, people who are at the height of their careers, people with young families, young kids, and people who are very close to retirement, or are already retired.
I want to tell you about a caregiver's experience. The priority becomes spending more time with and helping their loved one. You don’t want to have to choose between staying home and caring for your loved one and going to work—that isn't a choice anyone should have to make.
