[Situation: Xavier Delisle, real estate agent and cancer survivor, talks about the impacts of his illness on his financial situation.]

I was concerned about a health problem I was having, and the next thing I knew, I was diagnosed with a mediastinal tumour that turned out to be Hodgkin's lymphoma.

I was young and in great shape, and I never thought it could happen to me. There are huge impacts and consequences when you’re diagnosed with cancer. I lost my two-year employment contract in Germany, for example, which changed a lot of things. For one thing, I had no income for two whole years. I had to use my personal savings just to cover the usual expenses, like my mortgage and car payments and all that. After two years of treatment, I wasn’t physically able to do the work I used to do. So, I went back to school. I had to take some courses, so that was another year without income.
