Confirm a dependent’s student status

Last updated: December 12, 2018

When a child turns 18 or 21 (depending on the age limit indicated in your plan booklet) they are no longer considered a dependent unless they are a full-time student. You’ll have to confirm their student status in your group insurance account at the start of every semester until they turn 25. If you don’t confirm their status, they’ll lose their coverage under your group plan.

IMPORTANT : When your dependent child turns 25 or stops being a full-time student, they’re no longer eligible for coverage under your plan. That means you’ll have to cancel their coverage. Once you have no more children who qualify as dependents, you’ll have to ask the person responsible for your group insurance plan to change your coverage type to either individual or couple.

Before you begin

  • The options shown in your account may differ from the screenshots shown here, depending on your plan and the province you live in. If there’s any information you can’t see or make changes to, contact the person responsible for your group insurance plan.
  • Any changes you make to your dependents’ information will take effect right away, unless you specify a future date.
